The Contractor Bond is a financial assurance that a contractor will complete a job to a client's satisfaction. Who needs a contractor bond?

In the State of Alaska, contractors are required to obtain a surety bond to be in compliance with Section 08.18 of the Alaska Statutes.

What is the contractor bond?

The contractor bond protects the party requesting the surety bond, the Obligee, against any financial losses as a result of poor financial choices, damages, unethical decisions, or a failure to adhere to state and local laws on the part of you, the Principal. By obtaining your contractor bond, you are telling the Obligee that you can be trusted and that you stand by your business decisions. The bond is filed for the benefit of consumers who may suffer damages as a result of defective construction or other license law violations, and for the benefit of employees who have not been paid wages that are due to them.

Depending on the kind of contracting work you do, your bond amount will vary:

General contractors: $25,000

Specialty contractors: $5,000

General contractor bonds expire on December 31st of even years.

Specialty contractor bonds expire on December 31st of odd years.

What else do I need besides the bond?

The State of Alaska requires that all licensed contractors hold both liability and workers' compensation insurance:

  • LIABILITY INSURANCE - A certificate of insurance for public liability and property damage insurance (not less than $20,000 for property damage, $50,000 for injury or death to one person, $100,000 for injury or death to more than one person).

  • WORKERS' COMPENSATION - Evidence of workers' compensation insurance is required under AS 23.30 for registration as a construction contractor. An "all states endorsement" will not fulfill this requirement.
