Who needs a contractor bond?
In the State of Oregon, contractors are required to obtain a surety bond to be in compliance with Chapter 701 of the Oregon Revised Statutes.
What is the contractor bond?
The contractor bond protects the party requesting the surety bond, the Obligee, against any financial losses as a result of poor financial choices, damages, unethical decisions, or a failure to adhere to state and local laws on the part of you, the Principal. By obtaining your contractor bond, you are telling the Obligee that you can be trusted and that you stand by your business decisions. The bond is filed for the benefit of consumers who may suffer damages as a result of defective construction or other license law violations, and for the benefit of employees who have not been paid wages that are due to them.
Depending on the kind of contracting work you do, your bond amount and insurance requirements will vary:
License Type | Bond Amount | Liability Insurance Required Per Occurrence |
Residential General Contractors | $20,000 | $500,000 |
Residential Specialty Contractors | $15,000 | $300,000 |
Residential Limited Contractor | $10,000 | $10,000 |
The Oregon contractor bond is also known as: Oregon residential contractor bond; residential general contractor bond, residential specialty contractor bond, residential limited contractor bond, residential developer bond.
What else do I need besides the bond?
The State of Oregon requires that all licensed contractors hold liability insurance and, in some cases, workers' compensation insurance:
Workers compensation may be required depending upon the structure of your business. Consult the Board's application packet to determine what your insurance requirements will be.
